One-of-a-Kind Works Rooted in Story, Land, and Abenaki Teachings

Original Artwork by Jessica Somers

Original artwork by Jessica Somers consists of singular, hand-created pieces that carry story, symbolism, and lived experience.
Each original is created entirely by Jessica, drawing from her Abenaki heritage with ancestral ties to Odanak. No two works are ever the same. Materials, textures, and meanings are shaped by the land, the story being shared, and the moment in which the piece is created. These works exist as cultural, educational, and artistic pieces meant to be lived with, reflected upon, and respected.

Types of Original Works

Wood Panel Pieces

Hand-painted balsam poplar panels form a core part of Jessica’s original work.

Details include:
• Natural balsam poplar panels, sealed for durability
• Sizes ranging from 11×22 inches to 22×48 inches
• Each piece shaped by the natural grain and character of the wood

The wood itself becomes part of the story, grounding the artwork in material connection to the land.

Feather Art

Feather pieces are created with deep attention to symbolism, care, and intention.

Details include:
• Use of turkey, goose, raven, and crow feathers
• Displayed in shadow boxes ranging from 8×10 inches to 30×40 inches
• Symbolism embedded in feather choice, placement, and imagery

Each feather carries meaning, and each piece reflects teachings connected to respect, responsibility, and relationship.

Murals and Large-Scale Works

Some original works exist at a larger scale.

These may include:
• Painted walls, boards, or sea-cans
• Themes centred on land, community, and the history of Indigenous peoples
• Occasional work on tipis, integrating storytelling and ceremonial context

These pieces often live in public or community spaces and are created with intention and collaboration.

Paddles and Canoe Art

Hand-painted paddles and canoe-related works explore movement, journey, and shared responsibility.

These pieces often incorporate:
• Animal symbolism and teachings
• Reflection on leadership and teamwork
• Connection to Turtle Island as a shared home

Each paddle serves as both an artwork and a teaching piece, inviting reflection on how we move forward together.
